![]() ![]() The event began at Pecan Grove Dairy and Grassy Flats Dairy, where students learned from industry experts on milking protocols, feed center management, cow comfort, and other areas related to dairy management. The Dairy Challenge Academy runs in conjunction with the National Dairy Challenge contest, and the main objectives are to provide dairy education and networking for four-year dairy programs as well as further engage university and industry professionals in teaching contemporary dairy issues. Dani Tews and Johan Osorio coached the team. The group of students from South Dakota State University consisted of: Abby Hopp, Calissa Lubben, Jenna Van Wyk, Brooke Engstrom, Alexandra Preszler, and Josie Kindwall. The Academy division included 96 students from seven universities, which were divided into teams, including students from various schools, and dairy industry volunteers working as advisors. ![]() Hosted by the Southern Region in Tifton, GA, 36 universities from 29 different states and Canadian provinces traveled to Georgia for the 18th annual Dairy Challenge. Overall, it was a fun and rewarding experience for the students. In addition to the contest they toured Hilmar Cheese Plant, and were able to take some extra time to visit Old Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada National Forest. The students from SDSU competed in aggregate teams with participants from California, Utah, Idaho, Texas, and Washington. They looked through herd health, production, and financial records as well as performing on-farm analysis of facility design, milking procedures and cow well-being. During the contest, students performed a full- farm analysis of Fiscalini Farms, a 1400-cow herd in Turlock, California. Participants included Brooke Engstrom of Renville, MN, Jenna Van Wyk of Ramsen, IA, Sanne de Bruijn of Vicksburg, MI, and Calissa Lubben of Edgerton, MN. The South Dakota State University Dairy Challenge team had the chance to escape the cold winter weather of South Dakota and compete at the Western Regional Dairy Challenge contest in Modesto, CA on Feb 18 to Feb 22, 2020.
